HVAR LOCAL GUIDE

Discover Hvar like a local - from charming beaches and scenic walks to the best restaurants, bars, and hidden spots. All essential tips in one guide.

Cultural Landmarks

True hedonism has flourished on Hvar since the days of luxurious Roman villas and Renaissance summer residences. Despite the challenges of island life, these architectural gems still shine today. Hvar is also the place where organized European tourism began — 155 years ago.

My Personal Recommendations – Things to Do Nearby

Neighborhood Essentials:

 Supermarkets:
  • Konzum (by the bus station, behind the cathedral)
  • Studenac (on St. Stephen’s Square)

 Rentals:

  • Next to the bus station and supermarket Konzum, you’ll find stands to rent cars, bikes, or scooters.
  • Go down the stairs from the apartment, past Mizarola restaurant to the sea, then right along the waterfront — you’ll find boats for rent and stands offering day trips to Pakleni Islands and beyond.

Swimming & Nature

My Favorites:

  • Robinson Beach & Restaurant, Mekicevica bay – My absolute favorite; go by boat or hike 30–40 minutes from Pokonji Dol.
  • Zaraće Bay – Two beautiful beaches and restaurants, usually not crowded
  • Dubovica Bay – Beautiful beach and restaurant, can be crowded during the top of the season
  • Pišćena & Red Rocks – Reachable by boat from Hvar; amazing cliffs for swimming & cliff-jumping, small cave and pebble beach

Pakleni Islands Highlights:

  • Mlini Beach (Ždrilca) – Relaxed with bar & restaurant
  • Jerolim Island – Less crowded, pristine; swim on the open-sea side
  • Palmižana – Sandy beach, snorkeling, beach bars (can get crowded)

Boats to Pakleni islands depart in front of the Arsenal building. Return ticket: 10 EUR

Beaches near Hvar town:

Pokonji Dol, Bonj, Majerovica, Amfora, and Falko are all within walking distance (15–30 min). These beaches are mostly rocky or pebbly, with pine tree shade and beautiful views of the Pakleni islands. Some have beach bars or restaurants nearby.

For nature lovers:

  • Explore the Napoleon Fortress (amazing views)
  • Take the forest path to Velo Grablje
  • Walk around the Hvar Fortress and its gardens

For those with more time and energy:

Take a walk from the ferry along the waterfront, pass under the town loggia, and continue by the sea. Enjoy the views, boats, pine forest, and end at Falko bar for sunset. Return walk to the apartment is about 25 minutes.

Beaches suitable for children

  1. Pokonji Dol
    • Pebble-sand beach with a shallow entrance to the sea
    • Restaurant and restrooms available
    • Accessible by car with nearby parking
    • Popular with families, though it can get crowded

  2. Beach below Amfora Hotel
    • Concrete beach with steps into calm, shallow water
    • Near a small park with pine tree shade
    • Good for children under supervision

  3. Bonj Beach (just east of Amfora)
    • Stylish location with sunbeds and clean water
    • Suitable for kids if parents want more comfort

  4. Majerovica – Small beach near Falko Bar
    • Natural pebble beach, peaceful and less crowded
    • Some shade available

  5. Mlini Beach (Pakleni Islands)
    • Located in the Ždrilca area of the Pakleni Islands, Mlini Beach is a family-friendly spot with calm, clear waters and a gentle entrance, ideal for children.
    • There’s a restaurant on-site and sanitary facilities available, making it a great choice for a full-day beach outing.

For very young children or families with strollers, Pokonji Dol is likely the most convenient choice.

Suggested Tour:

  1. Swim in Zaraće bay: Start your day with a swim at picturesque Zaraće. You can choose between two beaches: Velo Zaraće (rocky and peaceful) or Malo Zaraće (more accessible and pebbly).

  2. Drive to Sv. Nikola (Hvar’s highest peak): Continue your trip to Sv. Nikola – the highest point on the island with a panoramic view over central Dalmatian islands. The last part of the road is a gravel path, so drive carefully.

  3. Optional hike down to Sveta Nedjelja: Adventurous travellers might enjoy a short (but steep) hike from the peak down to Sveta Nedjelja. This charming village is known for its wines, cliffs and relaxed vibe. A car can wait for you below.

  4. Swim + visit Bilo Idro restaurant/vinery: Relax with a swim in the turquoise sea and enjoy a unique restaurant built into a seaside cave. Book in advance if you plan to eat there.

Have a lovely time!
